Pick the Right Fly Fishing Line for Your Fishing Trip

A good fly fishing line is an indispensable part of the equipment for any one planning to have a great day out fishing. The nature of the fishing line can make the day successful or can simply ruin it. According to the type of fish to be caught the fishing line has to be chosen and prepared. This is clearly in addition to the right fly and the right rod.

The fly fishing line should be selected with great care. Selecting the right kind of fishing rod and the right kind of fishing line is considered a skill. A good fishing rod can never compensate for a bad fishing line, which in turn will turn out to be a failure. So, a proper fly fishing line is a must to be measured as being sufficiently geared up for a fishing trip. A few important points should be taken into consideration before selecting a fly fishing line.

The equipment used in fly fishing, is priced according to its weight. The weight of the fly fishing line should complement the weight of the rod. Any discrepancy should be avoided. The weight of the line is determined depending on the size of the fish. For example, a small trout fish will require only a 'weight 3' line. Whereas a bigger salt water fish requires a 'weight 9' line. Since the fishing flies are very light, tossing the fishing line into the water depends mainly on the weight of the line used.

The shape of the fly fishing line should be taken into consideration. It usually is available in two shapes. The diameter of a 'double taper line' increases along the length of the line and then starts to decrease at a set length at the ends, the diameter of a 'weight forward line' tend to be more at the front end. The 'double taper line' is recommended for roll casting. The 'weight forward line' is suggested for long casting of the fly fishing line.

The next aspect to be taken into account while choosing a fly fishing line is whether to choose a floating line or a sinking line. This is decided by the choice of the nature of the fly, whether a dry one or a wet one. Logical as it may sound, dry fly has to float on the surface of the water whereas the wet one can be allowed to sink in the water. Another important issue is the type of fish that you plan to catch. If they belong to species that feeds more commonly below the surface of the water then it is imperative that a sinking line be chosen.

In essence the nature of the fly fishing line has to be determined much before you start fishing by doing some homework and planning. The fly fishing line should ideally suit the type of fish that you have planned to game. And more importantly in choosing the line the main determinants would be the nature of the line, its weight and its shape.
